The German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt is located at the heart of Germany and centrally in Europe. Its location in the EU provides access to the huge European single market with more than 500 million inhabitants. About 25 percent of the EU population lives within 500 km.
Saxony-Anhalt is well connected. The state offers one of the densest infrastructure networks in Europe. The five motorways cross the main trans-European transport routes.
Saxony-Anhalt has more than 11,000 km of modern roads, over 600 km of navigable waterways, important European rivers such as the Elbe and with over 31,000 km one of the densest rail networks in the world. For the seaports like Hamburg, Rotterdam or Antwerp, Saxony-Anhalt forms the important port hinterland. The port of Magdeburg is one of the most modern in Europe and the largest in central Germany. Through a low-water lock, it allows a water level independent connection to the main waterways.
